Kongo

A letter in the Portuguese archive, dated July 1526: Afonso, king of Kongo, tells the king of Portugal, whom he calls his brother, that merchants are emptying his country. It is read as the first protest against the slave trade, yet he sold people himself and was complaining that the Portuguese no longer went through him.
