A fish sits on the table, whole, eyes open, and no one finishes it. On the last evening of the lunar year, the word for surplus sounds almost like the word for fish, so a pun becomes a dish. The chapter follows this Han family table, where the dead eat first, to the ancestor tablet and the surname that comes before a person's own name.
