5.4

The Mosuo

Past midnight a young man crosses a packed-earth courtyard, climbs the outside stairs to a woman's chamber, and before dawn walks back to his mother's house, where his sister's children are growing up. At Lugu Lake the Mosuo live in households run by women, where children stay in the mother's line. The chapter shows what holds kinship together when nobody moves away.
