A vermilion gate stands in the water off Miyajima, and it leads into open sea. The shrine is the island itself: for centuries no one has been born or buried there. The chapter reads Japan as an order of thresholds, from purification and a shrine rebuilt every twenty years to the harmony the country asks of people and the price it charges.
