THE LONG HUMAN WAY

The Many Ways of Being Human

9.10

Synthesis

On the table sit a wooden figure from Sulawesi, a red knife, a bow from Lake Eyasi, and now a phone. Three are variations; the fourth is a specimen, since the same phone lies on tables in Nairobi, Ulaanbaatar, and Kingston. The chapter asks whether a single human culture exists, and finds a shared infrastructure laid over an order of obligations that stays local.
