Domestication: Who Actually Tamed Whom

This episode flips the usual domestication story, asking whether humans tamed animals and plants, or were reshaped as much as they reshaped them. It draws on a 2018 study showing livestock now outweighs all wild mammals combined, and a fourteen-thousand-year-old grave near Bonn containing a puppy nursed through near-fatal illness despite being of no practical use. You hear why the Siberian fox-breeding experiment, long cited as proof that tameness alone produces floppy ears and patchy coats, has been challenged: the foundation foxes were already partly tame fur-farm stock. The recurring point is that wheat, wolves, and cattle all lost and gained something in this exchange, but the power to set the terms was never mutual.
