Madagascar

In the highlands of Madagascar, a woman points at a stone and says vato, at the moon and says volana, words that in Malaysia are batu and bulan. Africa lies a few days across the channel, yet the language's closest relatives are spoken on the Barito river in southern Borneo, and the ancestors rest in stone tombs above the rice terraces.
