Pueblo, Hopi, Navajo
On a rock spur in northeastern Arizona, a Hopi man drives a planting stick up to 45 centimeters deep into the sand of a dry wash and drops in several kernels, reaching moisture that winter snow left behind. North of him, the Diné scatter houses and flocks across the land. The chapter sets farmers and herders side by side, with different ways of ordering home, calendar, and ceremony.
