The Basques

A gray wall in a village square behind Bilbao, a hard ball slammed against it bare-handed, a banner overhead: Euskaraz bizi nahi dut, I want to live in Basque. Euskara has no known relatives, yet mountains did not save it. The chapter shows a language surviving because parents choose Basque schools and a movement rebuilt what the state tore down.
