The Roma

At the lower end of a village in eastern Slovakia the pavement stops, and a woman carries canisters of paňi up from the last hydrant. It is the same word as pani in Delhi, inherited across a thousand years. The chapter follows the Roma from India through Byzantium into Europe and asks what held a people together without land, book, or state.
